Ghevondian
Is Ghevondian an Armenian surname? It probably is.

Yes it is, denoting descent from a man named Ghevond, apparently the Greek name Leonidas. L in other languages sometimes becomes GH in Armenian, e.g., Nikoghos (Nicholas), Baghdasar (Balthazar). Then a V tends to be inserted between E and O, e.g., Gevorg (George), Levon (Leon, with an L which, contrarily, remains an L).

I may have been mistaken in suggesting that Ghevond = Leonidas. According to this name list -
http://www.armenian.name/index.php?a=list&d=1&p=3&strict=1&w1=G
it = Leontius.
