I found a bit different ...I found that it's a shorten form of Judah ... from Hebrew meaning "praised" ...originally the 4th of Jacob's sons and eventually the name of the Hebrew state that ultimately gave us the term "Jew" ...Jordan, name of the famous river, means in Hebrew "descending" ...which makes sense since that's what a river does ...It may also be related to the term Jutes, one of the Germanic tribes from Jutland that invaded England ... geographically they're usually considered to be from Denmark ...the term (I've heard) is another name for a "peninsula" as it 'juts' out into the ocean ...

That was my first thought, too: son of Jude. But the I looked it up at Reaney & Wilson and they say it's from Jordan. So where did find Jude and the Jutes? Sounds interesting.
