Surname as a Given Name..Yes? or No?
Can we use Surname as a Given Name for our child?
Replies
That depends on what your surname is! I personally would not use my own surname as a childs name "Hartridge" or a surname such as Smith. However some surnames work very well. Such as Llwyd (or Lloyd), Rowan or Jackson
So Id say asses whether or not the surname you have in mind would look and sound right as a first name! :)

Just look at Alexander and Grant and Cody and Blair! they all used to be surnames too! I say go for it!

I don't see why not... Lots of currently common first names derive from surnames. Take mine for instance:
GRANT
From a Scottish surname which was derived from Norman French grand meaning "great, large". [http://www.behindthename.com/name/grant]
Anyway, if you're just looking for an opinion as to whether it's hip or not, I think it depends on the name and personal taste. Sometimes it sounds a little pretentious in my opinion, or like the parent was trying too hard to come up with something unique. Then again, I think some surnames work well as given names. Mason is one that I kinda like.
