We've always believed the name is Italian although the e on the end is not typical of Italy. A geneologist told one of my family members the name likely originated in the northern part of the country near the border with France where the e wouldn't be uncommon but I've no proof to confirm that.

The first Malarsies in the US were from either Austria or Hungary according to the information at tinyurl.com/ycenpd4s. Those two countries formed a constitutional union before they emigrated as you can see at tinyurl.com/onhagn5.
