Doubtless from the the given name Rodion, possibly a diminutive form with Ukrainian patronymic suffix. Rodion is Greek in origin, like so many Orthodox baptismal names. It is either from the name Herodion, which appears to derive from the name of the goddess Hera, or from the word hero. Alternatively it may be from a Greek word meaning "pink" or "rosy".
