My Husbands last name is Ireland. We were always told it meant man from ireland but have no idea how to find his ancestral history, He was told his great grandfather came from Ireland to work on the railroad in the United States but no family history ever was kept

You'll find the origin of Ireland at http://www.ancestry.com/facts/ireland-family-history.ashx. There was surely more than one Ireland immigrant to the US. You'll find what was probably the earliest one at http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=camuskett&id=I203.
