Maybe it is from Vretas (ÂÑÅÔÁÓ) meaning wooden statue or idol (like the ancient Greeks worshipped) or wooden icon (like the modern Greeks do). In ancient Greek, Vretas was also a methaphor for stupidity :)

My surname is Papalouka...it means Louka's who is a priest kids...It isn't much better...
