One of my friend's last names is Nervik. He said he thought it might be Norwegian, but he wasn't sure. Does anyone have any more information on it?

Yes it's Norwegian and it looks like a place name, though I haven't identified a place called Nervik.
If you consult the list of Nordic surname components at

you'll find that NER = neder, i.e., "lower", and VIK means "bay".
