Van Citters
Any ideas as to the meaning and/or origin of this last name? Based on my browsing here, I'm guessing it's Dutch. "Citters" is pronounced "sitters" (as in "babysitters"), by the way. Thanks in advance.

I think it is Dutch, I found the name on a Dutch website with surnames (http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/nfd/detail_naam.php?naam=Citters,%20van), it doesn't have a meaning listed, but it refers to another surname "Van Seters" for the meaning. This surname means "person from Seters" (a hamlet near Oosterhout, which is a city in the Netherlands). Alternate spellings appear to be Van Ceters or Van Citters. One note: I don't think this website is very clear with referring to other surnames, but it is reliable. So Van Citters is definately Dutch, and "van" always means "of / from / belonging to", but I'm not sure if Citters is definately Seters. It does look to me that Citters is a location, denoting where the bearer of the surname is from.
