Wielgus Wielgos Wielgorz
The origin and meaning of thei surname would be appreciated. My grandparents came from Kielce, Russia Poland in 1909 & 1910 respectfully. They lived and raised their family in Hudson County, called Bayonna NJ [Bayonne]. The search has not given me anyone before Stanislau and Sofie. The Maisden name was given as Bresvicki but others tell me it was a similar spelling like Bez_vicki etc. Any help? peekaboobrat at yahoo dot com

Wielgus means "the big one". Certainly it does appear to be related to words like wielky "big", wielgachy "huge". The -us ending gives the name a Lithuanian appearance, and there is a Lithuanian surname, Vielgus. But some Lithuanian surnames are modified Polish names, and vice versa.
