The origin of Mickens is a bit of a mystery judging by the entry at http://www.ancestry.com/facts/Mickens-family-history.ashx. It seems to pop out of nowhere in the US near the end of the 18th century. If I had to guess, I'd say it's an alteration of Dutch Muykens but I have no direct evidence.
