However, the name Lingerfelt (with r before the f and t ant the end) is also found in Germany, but at a quite different location, namely at Landkreis Rhön-Grabfeld (Northernmost Bavaria).
Lingenfeld is a village near Germersheim in Southwestern Germany, it has a Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingenfeld
As I was told, my great Grandfather came to the United States from Holland right after the American Civil War. He bought a small parcel of land in the area of Chattanooga, TN and share-cropped the land with freed slaves. His son (my Grandfather) was Benjamin Floyd Lingerfelt and was married to Emma Lillian Smith. They had 4 sons (Benjamin Floyd Jr, Levi, Joseph, and my Father, Marion David).
I had been told that our last name meant "Dweller of the Land" and in basic terms, our history was that we were farmers and skilled tradesmen.

The original name seems to be Lingenfelder as you can see at http://tr.im/i7Hu. This designates a person from Lingenfeld which you can situate at http://tr.im/i7GY.
The domain tr.im is now for sale, the redirects are lost by this.
Thanks!
