Replies
Your name Gontran as a surname or as a firstname is French or from French-speaking countries. The surname is a patronym, thus meaning "son of Gontran". The firstname Gontran is a Germanic name, meaning "battleshield", from the Germanic elements gund "battle" and rand "shield".
THANKS FOR YOUR INFO. I KIND OF HAD AN IDEA THAT IT WAS FRENCH,IT'S A NORMAL NAME IN GERMANY OR FOR FRENCH PEOLPE.I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW?
GONTRAN in Germany
I have never heard of anyone in Germany called GONTRAN. It's not in the Duden Lexicon Familiennamen, which covers the most popular 10 000 surnames in Germany. Google gives 2000 hits only, many of which seem to refer to non-Germans. I even found GONTRAN as a given name, but the guy is Swiss (http://www.doktor.ch/verzeichnisse/adressen-aerzte/chirurgen/2817.html)
