Does anyone know if this surname exists, and if so what its origin is? I came across it on a fictional character in a book ('The Unbearable Bassington' by H. H. Munro), so it could well be made up.
The character lived in England, and I don't think anything was said about her family background.

This is a fictitious name which looks suspiciously like Benares, the name of a city in India. Benares also appears to be a Filipino surname.
