Maverick
my soon-to-be-brother-in-law's last name is Maverick. I, of course, think this is possibly the coolest last name ever. He says that he's never met anyone else (outside of his family) who has the last name Maverick. It got me curious.Anyone know anything about this surname?

The surname Maverick can be traced back to 16th century England as you can see at http://tr.im/si65. It was originally spelled Mavericke. The first Maverick arrived in the US in the early 17th century as shown at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Maverick_(colonist). You'll find the distribution of the surname at http://www.ancestry.com/facts/maverick-family-history.ashx.

I had found the information about Samuel Maverick and assumed that he was the first 'American' Maverick. Thanks for your information!
