My Irish Surname book has it as Irish Ó Maolruain, or ‘Servant of Ruanaidh’, a personal name meaning “little redhead”.

It's from a Gaelic name Ó Maolruanaidh, its early occurences are mostly in County Fermanagh and in Mayo/Roscommon. It belongs to Clann Lugain, that branch of the Oriel Ui Cremhthainn who were driven from the Clogher area by the Cineal Eoghain of Aileach. Well, we all know THAT...
