Can anyone point me to the meaning of the French surname Magnol, as in Pierre Magnol, namesake of the magnolia tree?

Jean Tosti informs us here -
that there are several places in France called 'Le Magnol', one possible source of the name.
Alternatively he suggests that it could be a diminutive of the male given name MAGNE, which is from the Latin Magnus, meanng "great".
