Woodmason
Does anyone have any idea of the origin & history of my surname. All my family are white british and lived in the East End of London, Although I believe that the name is also to be found in Devon aroung Plymouth. I have heard that it may originate from the carving of figuirheads for sailing ships which may be possible with the docks in London & Plymouth. Can't find the name on any sites regarding surnames. keith@woodmason.freeserve.co.uk

Woodmason is simply the occupational name wood-mason (like stone-mason) according to Bardsley's Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames. You'll find the original reference at http://tr.im/IwrD though it's a bit garbled.
