I can verify beata's information. The MacNamara's are very numerous in all Ireland but especially in North Munster. They were an important sept of the Dál gCais tribal grouping which are common to Clare and are connected to the O'Briens.

What I've found is it's an anglicization of MacConmara, meaning son of Conmara. Conmara is said to mean "hound of the sea" however I cannot vouch for the meaning's accuracy.
