Hinkle is an alteration of German Hinkel as you can see at http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gretzinger_desc&id=I74271. Hinkel is a pet form of Hinrich, a variant of Heinrich 'Henry'.
