The Meaning Of The German Surname Puhl Is As Follows: : A Small Lake typically filled with stagnant and impure water (cf. modern 'Pfuhl').
Many thanks for the information although it's not a particularly desirable meaning to have as one's name is it? LOL That is, of course, if the connection between Pull and Puhl is correct.
It turns out they are actually listed together as variants:
POUHL
POUL; PUHL; PFULL; PUL; BUL; PULL; POL;
wohnhaft 'am Pfuhl' = sumpfige Mulde; Pfütze

Many thanks Anon. I appreciate the help.
I see on http://www.uni-saarland.de/fak7/siems/people/neubert/genealogy/DB/D0056/I5597.html that a German man born in 1718 called Poul had a father called Poul, a brother called Puhl, and a son called Pull. You decide what conclusions can be drawn from that fact.
