I'm told it's from Syria and may alternatively been spelled Sawaya.

I have read an explanation of this name in Philip Hitti's history of Lebanon. According to tradition Sawaya derives from the name of the European region of Savoie. The bearers of this name, Christians, claim a crusader origin. I should add that Hitti does not endorse this explanation, but records it without comment.

I think you'll find the origin proposed at http://www.ancestry.com/facts/Sawaya-name-meaning.ashx somewhat more plausible.
