Asby
Does anyone know anything about my last name Asby? It isn't all that common, somewhere behind 30,000 on the list of common names.

I'm guessing that it's a variant of 'Ashby' which is Scaninavian for "ash-tree farm" ....

Usually, in Scandinavian languages or those descended from them, the "-by" is from something like "byr" which ultimately means something like "place or farm or stead" ...and so the 'As' part often gets shorten through dialect from 'Ash' to 'As' ...not unusual ...

Sorry for the numerous postings ...but thus, your name is probably English or remotely Scottish but ultimately coming from the Scandinavian influence on them ....

I think that it is English, thanks for the information. Maybe that's why people always say Ashby instead of Asby. Very annoying, but I won't trouble you with my complaints. Thanks!
