origin of surname
I am unable to find the origin and meaning of the surname Groeneman.
I was told it is German, but can't find anything on it. Any information is appreciated.

The book "German Names" by Hans Bahlow has Gronemann/Grohmann/Grohnemann. It means "from Grone, near Göttingen" (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grone_%28G%C3%B6ttingen%29).
The "oe" in Groeneman is a way to write the German letter "ö".

I think I've found something for you :)There is a Dutch village called Groenekan and I'm guessing Groeneman denotes that he is from that village and so the usage would actually be Dutch - which is in the german branch. Hope this has been informative!
