I just found out that my gg-grandmother was a Stumpf from Germany who immigrated to Illinois. I was wondering what is the origin of the Stumpf family name?

As a german surname Stumpf could also be a "trunk of a tree".
I have found Stumpf in Berlin, Frankurt am Main, Hamburg.
No Stumpf in southern germany region BAVARIA.
