Gufford/McGufford???
Hello everyone, I'm new here and since I am into genealogy this looks like a great place to search! :-)Anyway, one of the family names which has everyone stumped is "McGufford". Our first known ancestor was a Nathaniel McGufford who apparently came from Scotland in the 18th century to Wilmington, NC. Later the family dropped the "Mc" and just called their name "Gufford".This name has proven impossible to track down!! I do feel it's Scottish, but if anyone can give me ANY info on this name, I would be extremely grateful!!British, German, Swiss--Just Your Average, Everyday Mutt! :-)

I'm all but convinced that McGufford is an alteration of MacGuffog or one of the many variants listed by Black in The Surnames of Scotland. If MacGuffog could be interpreted as McGuffok, Maccoffoc, Macoffoke, MacCuffok, McCoffot, McGuffolk, M'Guffach, and the like, it could certainly have become McGufford.

Thank you, Marc! Yes, it does sound very similar, and Americans for some reason have always had trouble dealing with Scottish names--can't tell you how often I've seen "Angus" written as "Anguish", lol! I think this definitely is worth pursuing--thanks again!! :-)
