It is Scottish, from a Perthshire place-name (Scobie) which looks like it ends in the Danish -by, "farm". As for a clan connection, I note that the they are counted as followers of the Mackays. These connections are often tenuous, even spurious, and promoted by firms that sell tartan. There were some Scobies who settled in Sutherland and might have lived in the Mackay territory.

According to the Oxford Name Companion the place nname Scobie comes from the Gaelic sgolbach, meaning "thorny"; so a thorny place.
