lokking for a surname meaning
Hi there,
Well we are an etymologists and a geneologists worst nightmare...
We are about to marry and are taking a completely new surname for ourselves.
Can you tell us the etymology of the name Kubay, or find anything with the alternate spelling of kubai? I believe that the first variant is slavic judging from 'first' names that we've scanned in birth records - perhaps Russian, Polish, Ukrainian (or maybe even Balkan) in origin.

Also do you know of any comprehensive sites where we can check if the name treanslates to something rude in another language? We'vw already tried the obvious translating engines (eg Alta vista's Babelfish but no results yet.

Thanks a million,
Kevin Kushnier (means 'furrier' by trade)
and Kara Snitowski - soonto be K & K Kubay/Kubai

I cannot find anything in Slavic (Russian, etc.) or on the Balkans. Indeed, I was able to find the Turkish "kubbe" (koo-bay) having the meanings "dome", "vault", "cupola", "sky".

I would propose the spelling Qubay or even Qbay, why not?
