Cuji
Not sure what my last name means, Cuji. Many say it may be Japanese, because our family used to have Japanese family members. Family also came from the indigenous people of latin america and also Spain. Recently, our family is from Ecuador.

My Ecuadorian Family last name is CUJI. They are all Quichua/Shuar, indigenous tribes of the Amazon region of Ecuador. But the name seems to come from the Shuar language. In Shuar Cuji means Coati-Mundi (a rainforest animal related to racoons.)

This surname Cuji seems to be of Spanish origin, but no Cuji are found in Spain, but in South America. This surname Cuji is closely similar to Japanese surname Kuji, but I don't think your surname Cuji is of Japanese origin. The name Cuji is no where to be found in Japan, but the name Kuji is quite common in Japan, which is probably the reason why many say it may be Japanese. The last name Cuji is mostly found in Ecuador. Similar last names I found is Cujilema, Cajilema, Cujilan, interestingly they are also mostly found in Ecuador. The name Cuji perhaps derived from "cují", but the meaning of the name I have not found yet. I have come across pictures of plants and trees while researching the name cují, and I also came across the name "El Cují", a place in Venezuela?. This surname Cuji is not found in Spain, perhaps of South American origin...

Actually there are very few Cujis living in USA, Mexico, Spain, and other countries. The Cuji are very concentrated in Ecuador.
