I'm also interested in the surname MINGO from Devon. My great-great-great grandmother, Hannah Mingo, was born and raised in Devon though I haven't been able to definitively find her date of birth because while there are records from March 1824 indicating that she was born in February and baptized (Methodist) in March of that year, in her dotage, she declared her DOB to be in November 1823 on the Canadian government Census (and it would seem, her children since even her death certificate has the November date).
As to the surname, Ancestry suggests that it comes from the BRETON for Stone (min) and Dog (ki). To me, this suggests that the name dates back pre-conquest to the time when both Cornwall and Devon were almost entirely Breton, sharing a common language (with separate dialects) with Brittany, Wales, etc. As the English moved into the Southwest, the population at large also moved west - to the Lizard and Lands' End! Mingo is a Devon name for certain and has more in common with its Cornish cousins than with the English. Just my opinion.
