I recently met a guy with this as his last name. He told me his family was from Sardinia. I don't know what Cossu means, though. Does anyone have an idea?

Cossu is a Sardinian word for the piece of clothing called a doublet (see tinyurl.com/7nr64a5) as well as for a Corsican. I'd say the latter is more probable as the origin of the surname.
