Origin of these names...
Hello. I'd like to know the origin of these surnames...Whitehead [My Surname]
Kribell [My Cousin's Surname]
Lindmier [My Friend's Surname]I've only found the origin of "Whitehead", but not a nationality, but the other two seem to have appeared out of thin air!

Kribell is indeed of German origin. This was my mother's maiden name, so I do know a little about the family :) My understanding is that it means "impotent". From what i know of the family history it is NOT accurate :)

Lindmier looks German, with the spelling altered slightly. Kribell could be too. Whitehead is English, unless it's a translation of Weisskopf, sticking to the German theme.

Lindmier looks like Lindemeijer and Lindmeyer, Dutch and German respectively, the meijer part probably meaning "merchant, trader". And the linde part might mean with respect to meijer "linen". Could be "lime tree", but i don't understand what meijer would be.

KribellI found that Kribell indeed is German. It's an adapted spelling of the name Kriebel or Kribl. I asked at a forum what the meaning is and i'll let you know as soon as i get the answer.

I found KRIEBEL in my book of family names (Rosa und Volker Kohlheim, Das große Vornamenlexikon, Mannheim 2003)says:
from Middle High German kribeln = to tickle
So it could be a ticklish person.

Hallo, der Name Kribel(l) / Kriebel kann (muß nicht!) einen Menschen meinen, der entweder sehr unruhig (kribbelig) war oder sehr kitzelig. Ein Mensch, der auf Berührung empfindlich reagiert.
the name Kribel(l) / Kriebel can (doesn't have to) denote a human being, who either was very restless (German kribbelig) or very irritable/prickly. Someone who reacts to any contact.Eine andere Deutung :
Another meaning:Kribel = Krivel = Krefeld Ob der Name sich von der Stadt Krefeld ableitet, kann durch Ahnenforschung geklärt werden.
Weither the name comes from the city Krefeld, can be explained through ancestor research.
--------------------------------------------------- nächste (next):Kriebel = Griebel
Grieb = Speck(würfel) oder Schmalz = bacon or lard
------------------------------- Krieb-el = Griebel = Grübel
einer, der an einer Grube oder Kuhle wohnt. = someone who lives next to a hole in the ground
------------------------------ wir müssten wissen, aus welcher Region Deutschlands die Ahnen kamen. Wo sie um 1600 wohnten.
We need to know from which region in Germany the ancestors came. Where they lived round 1600.Dann kann man mehr sagen. Then we can say more.netten Gruß.. Irmgard Greetings Irmgard
