Re: Surname "Garboden" and "Szynal"
in reply to a message by Marc
Perhaps the surname Garboden is an alteration of the Armenian surname Garbedian, also spelt Garabedian, whose origin you'll find here - http://www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=GarabedianGarabedian/Garbedian are very common here in the U.S, particularly California, where Oregon is a neighboring state. Oregon is where most of the Garbodens are found. I think the German origin is unlikely. One main reason is because the form Gerboden is not found. I haven't look much into the history of the Garboden surname. Maybe a German origin could be possible, but I think it is most likely of Armenian origin.

You'll find the genealogical data that backs up the German origin of Garboden at http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=stevespeeps&id=I7312. Can you provide any similar evidence for your alleged Armenian origin?

So to both of you so much for replying and hopefully opening doors to which will help me find more information on Family history :)

You're welcome. I have looked at the records and I now believe the surname Garboden is of German origin, as Mark have said, and I thought possible. Perhaps the English surname Garbutt is also of the same origin, also deriving from the German personal name Geribodo. Perhaps the Armenian origin is unlikely. I thank Marc for the evidence. It is always great to have researchers and experts correct each other, as the origin of the surname gets closer and closer to the truth!

You can get the full story on Garbutt at tinyurl.com/9vax42t. Also related are French Gerbaud and its many variants (see http://www.geneanet.org/nom-de-famille/GERBAUD).
