Surname: Thing
Does anyone have any information about Thing being used as a surname and it's origin and meaning? My dad's boss has Thing as a last name and all I can think is that it's British (like Smiley, ect.) or perhaps their last name was originaly something long and hard to pronounce (Polish, Russian, maybe) and when their family came to America they were just called 'Thing'! Any ideas? :)

Never heard of it. If it's British it's so rare as to be invisible. My only thought is that it could be a version of the English surname Thin/Thynne, which means what it says.
Otherwise your suggestion of an altered non-English language name is a likely explanation.
