Two surnames I am researching the etymology are my own last name, Boudreau and my mother's maiden name, Colvin. Any information would be much appreciated.

The name is especially carried in Two-Sevres (alternative: Boudreault). One finds in Aisne the Boudreaux forms, Boudriaux. It should be a question of a diminutive of Boudier (see this name), as the forms Boudereau (36 show it, 29) and Boudereaux (02). One also finds of Boudreau in Canada, the name having appeared in Acadie at the beginning of the XVIIecentury: Michel Boudrot is quoted in 1639 in an act written with Port-Royal, and seems originating in the surroundings in the Small rock. It should be noted that in France the name Boudrot is especiallycarried to Burgundy (alternative: Boudriot).
From 'Boudier' ...Name of anybody of origin Germanic, Bodhari (bod = messenger + hari = armed), carried in particular in Saone-et-Loire and Mayenne.
