Anyone have any information on Froeliger?
What is the origin of the name Froeliger? It sounds possibly German to me, but I honestly don't know, and I can't find any information on it through Google. This was the last name of my father's real father (my father never knew him, was adopted later by his stepdad). I'm interested in the history and origin of this surname to learn more about my own ancestry. __________________________

The name is certainly German in origin but it doesn't appear to exist in Germany even under the modern spelling Fröliger. However, Froeliger and Froliger are found in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France as you can see at tinyurl.com/kor4fdd and tinyurl.com/of4x7r7. The name may be an alteration of Frölicher which is derived from the German placename Frölich. You'll find the first bearer of the surname in the US at tinyurl.com/mjbwu7r and from there you can trace your ancestry all the way back to the early 1600s.
