Ćwirta is not really that rare as you can see at http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/%25C4%2587wirta.html. According to Hoffman's Polish Surnames dictionary, it's derived from ćwierć 'quarter' but it's not obvious to me what such a nickname could relate to.
