Meaning of the (italian?) surname Daghia

A friend of mine has the surname Daghia and we've been trying to discover the meaning behind it. My friend is Italian, so we think that's the country of origin, especially since we couldn't find any record of it anyplace else, but we could be wrong.

This surname doesn't look very italian, however it exists near Bologna (about 30 families). It is mysterious to me.
An italianization of a portuguese surname like D'aguias?
or aguias?
Difficult to say.

Thanks for the suggestion. that's a lot closer than any of the possible candidates i could find for correlation.
