fagen or feigen shortened from feigenbaum?
My grandfather emigrated to the U.S from the Ukraine in 1905. Are most Feigens.or Fagin or Fagen or other forms shortened from the German Feigenbaum assuming that these were German Jews who fled Germany and went to Eastern Europe during the persecution of Jews in Germany in the 17th century (more or less).Variations of Fagen seem to exist in Russia, Ukraine and probably in other Slavic countries. But its obviously not a Slavic name . Any help here?
