Re: Anyone know where the name is from?

Just a thought -
Ospedale, the Italian word cognate with the English "hospital" was the name of an orphanage in the island of Malta. This gave rise to the Maltese surname Spiteri, given to a foundling brought up in the home.
Perhaps the surname Hospedales has a similar origin.

Quite right actually. Hosepedale is an obsolete transcription of Ospedale in Italian. I totally forgot. They have the same latinate roots for a hosting-house. If you followed that vein, Hospidales could mean "hospital" or "innhouse". Nice.
