I wonder what the L could be at the end. Maybe a deminutive. "Scharf" indeed means "sharp" and as byname was given to a sarcastic person or as the Oxford Dictionary of First Names has it: an "energetic, active person".
In Germany you will find the spelling SCHARFF, so maybe the second F was mistaken for an L at one point. No idea.
