The name Vanselous/Van Selous can only be traced back to Asher Vanselous who was born in Kingwood, NJ around 1793 (see tinyurl.com/jvdyy55). There is every indication that it is an Americanization of a Dutch name, especially since Kingwood is in Hunterdon County which is known to have been settled partially by Dutch immigrants (see tinyurl.com/z63lctz). Consequently, the most probable origin of Vanselous is Van Sluis 'from Sluis', a placename in Zeeland. Van Sluis is a common surname in Holland as you can see at tinyurl.com/hndo93z.
