Re: Kubay / Kubai: Does anyone know the origin or meaning of this possibly Ukrainian, Russian, somehow slavic surnames?
I'm not sure, but I think there's a possibility that the name is Hungarian. The -i suffix (and its more archaic form, -y) in Hungarian surnames is very frequent, and means something like 'from'. (So Pesti means 'someone from Pest, Pécsi 'someone from Pécs' etc.)

Kuba means Cuba in Hungarian, but I doubt it would become a surname since it's so far from my country.

Hope this helped
