Re: Surname research: Murdock, Muldoon & Cooney
Murdock is Scottish ..."sea fighter" roughly ... but found in Ireland as well ... all the "Mur-" names come from a Gaelic word roughly equivalent to Latin "Mare" meaning sea or ocean.

Cooney is very common in Ireland, from Ó Cuanna, from the first name Cuán which may mean "stooped" in Modern Irish it's the word for a harbor (probably curved land) ...though I found it in another book, from O Cuaniaic, meaning "handsome, elegant" ...take your pick ...I'd go with the latter ...

Muldoon is also Irish from the first name Ó Maoldúin meaning "devotee of the dark warrior"
