Re: PONISI - SURNAME
in reply to a message by BERNARD SEAN KELLY
My paternal grandmother was Ellen Ponisi and she married Daniel Woods in Belfast. Daniel Woods had a tailor shop on Great St. Patrick street near Academy Street. They had 5 children - Patrick, George, Nellie, Cissie and Daniel. She died in childbirth around 1927 in Belfast. Her Husband Daniel moved to Glasgow, Scotland with 2 sons (Patrick and George) around 1930. The other 3 children stayed with relatives in Belfast. I believe Ellen had a sister named Georgina. I am the son of George Woods who moved to Toronto Canada in 1960. Patrick's son Stephen created a family tree on Geni, com It might be of interest.
There are several Ponisi families in Belfast. I tried to trace the origins of the name and found in the Italian phone directory a concentration of individuals with that name around Milan, Italy.
