Gran is a Norwegian surname as well. It means "spruce".

Seems to mean "moustache" or "beard" by the way, although it seems that sense is now archaic in every Germanic language, except in German begrannt "bearded". It was once the common Germanic term for moustache but has fallen out of use except in transferred senses. e.g. the "beard" of a plant.
