For his group company he uses the spelling 公文 "archive, official document", but for the publishing/toy subsidiary くもん, which google says is "relief of suffering". "Long gate/old gate" makes more sense as a surname though, but this makes Kumon simply the Japanese pronunciation of a Chinese name.
