According to Ancestry (see: https://www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=cantu), it is an Italian and Hispanic habitational name from Cantù, Lombardy. According to Italian Wikipedia (see: https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cant%C3%B9), the name of the village comes from Latin Canturium, either referring to the Canturigi—a Celtic tribe that once inhabited the area—or originating from Latin Cantores, referring to a choir gallery.
