It's a very old surname from the German frei which means free. That could refer to a personality trait (if that's what you're asking).

Also means 'joy'.The old Norse Freya (colloquially,Fro)and her brother's name Freyr come from the same root.It entered English and became Fry/Frye.The German 'Freude'(joy) shares the same root.Other words with related meanings are Friar and Frater(nal)(Latin) meaning 'brother' or 'brotherly'and 'phral'(Romany)meaning a friend or brother,giving us the word 'pal' in English.
