Komen also exists as van Komen in the Netherlands suggesting a habitational origin. Komen is the Dutch name of Comines, a town on the border of Belgium and France. While I haven't found a source that confirms this origin, it is an ethnic, linguistic, and historical Dutch region.
As for the etymology of Comines/Komen, it ultimately comes from an ancient Celtic word meaning "valley".
